Wonderful Sodium Bicarbonate

Best Articles on the Wonderful Sodium Bicarbonate

Besides water, baking yeast, and the moringa tree; Sodium Bicarbonate must be one  the best friend for the poor.
The wonderful uses and applications of Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda) are so numerous I felt compelled to list the best articles on this subject in one post.

1- Sodium Bicarbonate – Rich Man’s Poor Man’s Cancer Treatment

We have recently launched the second edition of the Sodium Bicarbonate E-book. The main thrust of the first edition was on the use of sodium bicarbonate for cancer treatment. This vastly expanded second edition extends coverage into important areas of kidney disease, diabetes, treatment of flu and the common cold, and other areas of general medicine. Truly sodium bicarbonate is a universal medicine that is nutritional as well as safe and is of help no matter what syndrome we are facing. The E-book is at IMVA Publications. This authoritative volume is the only full medical review available on the subject.
Sodium bicarbonate (Baking Soda) is one of the most useful substances in the world of medicine. This site is a portal into the world of bicarbonate and how it can be used to promote health and help cure cancer, kidney disease and a wide range of acute and chronic illnesses. Sodium bicarbonate has been used for decades as an adjunct in chemotherapy and is used commonly in emergency room and intensive care wards around the world.
For more than a decade there has been work going on at the University of Arizona, using bicarbonate as a potential treatment for cancer. Sodium bicarbonate is a world class anti-fungal but its use is not limited to that effect. Solid tumor fungal infections are powerful, resist attack and adapt quite readily to pharmaceutical anti-fungal drugs. After all fungi love to chew on rocks and they eat mercury for breakfast so you got to hit them correctly in an all out frontal attack with sodium bicarbonate.
Sodium bicarbonate also dramatically slows the progress of chronic kidney disease. Sodium bicarbonate can be used safely at home orally and transdermally but should always be used with magnesium chloride for greatest effect in both cancer and kidney disease as well with asthma and diabetes. The two together make up The Ultimate Mitochondrial Cocktail.

Mighty Mallet of Baking Soda

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) lives up to the image on the Arm & Hammer?s box, it is the ultimate heavyweight workhorse medicine that every healthcare professional and parent should use to diminish toxic poisoning from the Gulf disaster. When combined with other strong but basic natural substances like magnesium chloride, selenium and iodine one has the best chance of weathering the toxic storm that continues to build over the Gulf region.

Sodium bicarbonate is the number one item in any protocol to treat exposure to harsh chemicals coming from the oil disaster. The government should step in to direct supplies of bicarbonate into the area. Millions of pounds should be immediately distributed and stockpiled for supplies at the local supermarket are not going to last long when the public catches on to the danger and what to do about it. The very best treatment, when one first notices a foul smell, foul taste or flu-like symptoms is to jump into a bath with several pounds of bicarbonate and magnesium salts.

Baking Soda ? Every Cancer Patients Best Friend

As if it were not humiliating enough for orthodox oncologists to learn that the lowly chemical sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) is important in the treatment of cancer now they have to swallow the research pointing to the fact that bicarbonate can also be used to diagnose cancer in its earliest stages. Oncologists do understand and know that bicarbonate is necessary to protect their patients from the toxicity and harm done by highly toxic chemicals used in chemotherapy. They also know it is of extraordinary help to patients receiving radiation treatments protecting as it does the kidneys and other tissues of the body from radioactive damages.

Oncologists should also know that bicarbonate-induced extracellular alkalinization leads to significant improvements in the therapeutic effectiveness of certain chemo agents. A number of studies have shown that the extracellular pH in cancers is typically lower than that in normal tissue and that an acidic pH promotes invasive tumor growth in primary and metastatic cancers. The external pH of solid tumors is acidic as a consequence of increased metabolism of glucose and poor perfusion. Acid pH has been shown to stimulate tumor cell invasion and metastasis in vitro and in cells before tail vein injection in vivo.
Researchers have investigated the very reasonable assumption that increased systemic concentrations of pH buffers would lead to reduced intratumoral and peritumoral acidosis and, as a result, inhibit malignant growth. It has been shown that increased serum concentrations of the sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) can be achieved via oral intake. These researchers found that consequent reduction of tumor acid concentrations significantly reduces tumor growth and invasion without altering the pH of blood or normal tissues.

Administration Methods

Sodium Bicarbonate is one of the most flexible medicinals in terms of methods and modes of administration. It can be injected in emergency room situations, taken orally, nebulized, used transdermally as a lotion, put in enemas and in large quantities in therapeutic baths. Just dissolve it in water or when treating cancer can be mixed with Blackstrap Molasses. It is also one of the safest medicines with an extremely low toxic profile. The best way to take sodium bicarbonate is to administer it through oral and transdermal methods combined.

Cancer Treatment

I recommend people contemplating using sodium bicarbonate orally read Sodium Bicarbonate ? Rich Man?s Poor Man?s Cancer Treatment. People around the world are waking up to the fact that sodium bicarbonate belongs in every protocol for cancer. Robert J. Gillies and his colleagues have demonstrated that pre-treatment of mice with sodium bicarbonate results in the alkalinization of the area around tumors. (Raghunand 2003) This type of treatment has been found to ?enhance the anti-tumor activity? of other anticancer drugs.

Kidney Disease

New research by British scientists at the Royal London Hospital shows that sodium bicarbonate can dramatically slow the progress of chronic kidney disease. The simple household product used for baking, cleaning, bee stings, treating asthma, cancer and acid indigestion is so effective in treating kidney disease that it prevents patients from having to be put on kidney machines. The findings have been published in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. Bicarbonate is strong universal nutritional medicine that works effectively in many clinical situations.

Effects

There is no question that plasma bicarbonate concentrations are shown to increase after oral ingestion. The most important effect of bicarbonate ingestion is the change in acid-base balance as well as blood pH and bicarbonate concentration in biological fluids. In Europe, spa-goers drink bicarbonate-rich water to heal ulcers, colitis and other gastric disorders. Ingesting bicarbonate by way of bathing stimulates circulation, possibly benefiting those with high blood pressure and moderate atherosclerosis.

Bicarbonate Treatment for Swine Flu (1924)

Over 150 years ago Dr. Austin Church formed a business to produce and distribute Baking Soda. ARM & HAMMER Baking Soda is derived from a natural occurring mineral called trona. It is 100% pure, safe, and natural. Baking Soda (also known as sodium bicarbonate) is a substance that is found naturally in all living things. Its purpose is to maintain pH balance in the bloodstream, which is necessary to sustain life. Due to its chemical and physical properties, sodium bicarbonate has unique medicinal capabilities that every healthcare practitioner, doctor…

For Cold And Flu

Though we know by now that sodium bicarbonate is a most useful medicine for the treatment of cancer and kidney disease and have always known its good for stomach acid imbalances and for cleaning our pools and refrigerators it is not likely we have thought about it to help resolve our common colds nor to alleviate they symptoms and dangers of influenza. Medicine does not have to be complicated and mysterious nor do we have to lay still and be run over by the Hun Hordes of Influenza viruses that the health authorities want us to be so frightened of.

A Cancer Cure Case

Still Alive and Well

Well I am just delighted to share with you that I just got off the phone with Vernon Johnston, the gentleman that reached out to me when I was finishing my Sodium Bicarbonate book. He was the fellow who had been diagnosed with prostate cancer with metastasis to the bones. This was over 15 months ago and I wrote up his story and shared his treatment diary in my Rich Man?s Poor Man?s Cancer Treatment bicarbonate book. He was going to do a cesium chloride treatment but because his order got lost in the mail ended up doing sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) orally, managed to get his urinary pH up to 8.5 for five days and then within two weeks was back at his oncologists office for a test, which showed his bones being cleared of his cancer.

2- 51 Fantastic Uses for Baking Soda

I don’t mean to sound seditious here, but I have a rebellious plan to combat the ills that many corporations are perpetrating in the name of fighting grime and germs. My main gripe is about the environmental pollutants from cleaning and personal care products that we wash down our drains and into our water systems, resulting in situations like the chemical triclosan (a pesticide added to many products as an antibacterial agent) being found in dolphins.

So the simple plan is to encourage everyone to use baking soda in any of these 51 applications. Besides showing kindness to aquatic life, we can also protect ourselves from the array of toxins in household cleaning products. Conventional cleansers can expose us to multiple chemicals linked to asthma, cancer and other documented health problems.

Baking soda also makes a perfect stand-in for many personal care products, which are adding their own twist to the toxic tangle of pollutants and personal health (mainly in the form of synthetic fragrance (and it’s almost all synthetic), sodium laurel sulfate, and parabens).

So exactly how does baking soda fit into my scheme to make the world a better place? Baking soda, aka sodium bicarbonate,  helps regulate pH—keeping a substance neither too acidic nor too alkaline. When baking soda comes in contact with either an acidic or an alkaline substance, its natural effect is to neutralize that pH. Beyond that, baking soda has the ability to retard further changes in the pH balance, known as buffering. This dual capability of neutralizing and buffering allows baking soda to do things such as neutralize acidic odors (like in the refrigerator) as well as maintain neutral pH (like in your laundry water, which helps boost your detergent’s power). It’s a simple reaction, but one that has far-reaching effects for a number of cleaning and deodorizing tasks. And so without further ado, I’ll remove my scientist cap, put on my rebellious housekeeper’s cap, and get this folk-wisdom revolution rolling…

3- Sodium Bicarbonate Uses

Sodium bicarbonate is a very useful chemical compound with a crystalline appearance. Sodium bicarbonate uses have revolutionized many production processes and have also resulted in the effective development of many different consumer products and other household substances.
Sodium bicarbonate is basically a chemical compound, which is also often known as baking soda, bread soda, cooking soda and bicarbonate of soda. Students of science and chemistry have also nicknamed sodium bicarbonate as sodium bicarb, bicarb soda. Sometimes it is also simply known as bi-carb. The Latin name for sodium bicarbonate is Saleratus, which means, ‘aerated salt’. Sodium bicarbonate is a component of the mineral Natron, also known as Nahcolite which is usually found in mineral springs, the only natural source of sodium bicarbonate.
Uses of sodium bicarbonate are varied and also very useful. Sodium bicarbonate is used in many different fields that range from chemical industries to household applications. This compound is also used extensively in the manufacture of medicines. Among the many benefits of sodium bicarbonate is its ability to eliminate most of the bacteria and fungi and also act as a disinfectant. These sodium bicarbonate benefits make it a very important ingredient of medicines and cleaning agents. When a chemistry student is asked, ‘what is sodium bicarbonate used for?’, he is bound to give us a list that goes as follows.
Medical Uses
The following are the many applications of sodium bicarbonate in the field of medicine.
Indigestion
Sodium bicarbonate is one of the well-known antacid that is used by large number of pharmaceutical companies to make medicines that treat mild indigestion problems. The most common medicine is an aqueous solution of sodium bicarbonate that is used to treat minor digestive disorders such as acid indigestion and heartburn.
Metabolic Acidosis
Medicines that are used to treat mild forms of metabolic acidosis like chronic renal failure and renal tubular acidosis also contains a significant amount of sodium bicarbonate.
Urinary Alkalinization
Sometimes sodium bicarbonate is also used as an ingredient of medicines that are used in urinary alkalinization, to treat Aspirin overdose and uric acid renal stones.
Acidosis
An aqueous solution of sodium bicarbonate is also used to treat acidosis. This solution is administered with the help of Intravenous therapy. The solution is basically administered when a drop in the level of sodium or bicarbonate ions is noticed in the blood.
Hyperkalemia
One of the most well-known use is in the treatment for Hyperkalemia.
Toiletries
Sometimes manufacturers of toiletries use sodium bicarbonate as an ingredient for preparing mouthwashes as it is an excellent cleanser of teeth and gums. It also tends to reduce the production of acids in the mouth and prevents oral infection. Non-fluoride toothpaste also contain a significant amount of sodium bicarbonate. As a result of the antifungal properties of sodium bicarbonate, it is also used in shampoos and deodorants. The antifungal properties, tend to highlight the sodium bicarbonate benefits even more, making it a very effective ingredient.
There are numerous sodium bicarbonate tablets manufactured by pharmaceutical companies. However one must never consume such medications before consulting a doctor.
Industrial Uses
The following are some industrial uses of sodium bicarbonate.
When asked about the sodium bicarbonate uses, we often tend to forget the many industrial uses of the compound.
Textile Industry
One of the most prominent uses of sodium bicarbonate is the treatment of wool and silk fabrics. The textile industry, extensively uses sodium bicarbonate for dyeing and printing operations. The leather industry also uses sodium bicarbonate as a neutralizer of dyeing agents in tanning processes.
Leather Industry
In addition to the textile and leather industries sodium bicarbonate is also used by the chemical industries around the world. One of the prominent uses of sodium bicarbonate as a catalyst and purifier in the manufacturing process of complex plastics and polymers.
Rubber and Plastic
Another very prominent use of sodium bicarbonate is that it is used in the manufacturing process of rubber and plastics. The sodium bicarbonate that is used in the rubber and plastic manufacture is basically used as a blowing agent as it releases carbon dioxide. The release of carbon dioxide is very effectively used to shape the object that is made from the rubber and plastic.
Anti-Pollutant
The following are some use of sodium bicarbonate as an anti-polluting agent.
Sodium Bicarbonate is also a very effective anti-pollutant. Among the other uses of sodium bicarbonate, the use as an anti pollutant is very effective because sodium bicarbonate can be easily, used for the biological control of waste water. The compound basically controls biological oxygen demand, maintains alkalinity in waste water and also controls sulfide odors. It is also a very effective collector of sulfur dioxide, and is used in flue gas desulphurization( a method of treating industrial gases that are released into the atmosphere).
Household Uses
Baking
Among the household uses of sodium bicarbonate, the one that we all must definitely should know, is that it is used to bake delicious breads and cakes. The baking powders, contain a large quantity of sodium bicarbonate and is always accompanied by a small quantity of acid phosphate. During the baking process, some of the ingredients like phosphates, cream of tartar, lemon juice, buttermilk, cocoa, yogurt and vinegar react with sodium bicarbonate in the baking powder giving rise to a substantial amount of carbon dioxide that makes that cake or bread porous on the inside and pretty fluffy and soft. Sometimes, sodium bicarbonate is also used to soften peas, during boiling.
Cleaning Agent
Many household cleaning agents actually constitute sodium bicarbonate as a very important ingredient. Most of the cleaning agents that are used for the removal of tarnish, tend to contain a small amount of sodium bicarbonate.
Other Bi-carb Uses
The following are some of the miscellaneous uses.
One of the prominent use of sodium bicarbonate is that it is used in the manufacture of dry chemical based fire extinguishers. These fire extinguishers can be easily and effectively used to put out fires caused as a result of grease-based and electricity-based fires.
In many cases, the anti fungal properties of sodium bicarbonate have made it a very effective outdoor cleaning agent and also an agent to raise the pH levels (level of acidity or basicity). Thus many of the disinfectants and antiseptic agents that are used in spas and swimming pools have a content of sodium bicarbonate in them.
Librarians and book sellers are also known to have used sodium bicarbonate as a remedy for the musty smell that prevails in the pages of books.
Thus it can be concluded that sodium bicarbonate is a very useful compound and has a large variety of uses. The uses of sodium bicarbonate range from industrial to domestic. This compound is also a very important agent that helps us to maintain our hygiene and also helps us to get rid of nasty fungus and bacteria.

5- sodium bicarbonate – oral

Sodium bicarbonate reduces stomach acid. It is used as an antacid to treat heartburn, indigestion, and upset stomach. Sodium bicarbonate is a very quick-acting antacid. It should be used only for temporary relief. If you need to treat long-term stomach acid problems (e.g., peptic ulcer disease, GERD), talk with your doctor about other medications.Sodium bicarbonate is the active ingredient in baking soda.OTHER This section contains uses of this drug that are not listed in the approved labeling for the drug but that may be prescribed by your health care professional. Use this drug for a condition that is listed in this section only if it has been so prescribed by your health care professional. This medication may be used to make the urine less acidic. This effect helps the kidneys get rid of uric acid, thereby helping to prevent gout and kidney stones. It can make some medications (e.g., sulfonamides) work better or can help your body get rid of too much medication (e.g., phenobarbital). This medication can also prevent and treat certain metabolic problems (acidosis) caused by kidney disease.

6- Twenty Uses For Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate)

A while back I wrote about the many ways I use vinegar in our home.  And I’ve been saying over and over again that you only need vinegar, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and soap for the majority of your cleaning.  Well, several people have asked me what I use baking soda for – it’s high time I gave baking soda it’s due!
1.  Shampoo Replacement.  The number one article here at One Green Generation is A Non-Toxic, Frugal Way To Wash Your Hair Without Buying Shampoo.  I explain it all in detail there, and I wrote a follow-up about it here as well.  Try it!
2.  Deodorant.  Another very popular post here is How To Make Your Own Deodorant (A Very Simple Recipe).  I encourage you to try that as well – so simple!
3.  Air Freshener & Deodorizer. Brilliantly easy, all you need to do is open up a box of baking soda, or dump a pile of it into a bowl, and leave it in an offensively smelling area – your fridge, your closet, your pet area, you car, wherever!  (Change it out every 3-6 months.)
4.  Carpet and Garment Deodorizer. Just sprinkle a bit over the offensive area and let it sit.  A little while later, you can vacuum or shake it out.
5.  Counter, sink, and tub Cleaner. Just like using Bon Ami or some other powdered cleaner, sprinkle it onto the surface and rub with a wet cloth.  Be careful on delicate surfaces – test it out first to make sure it won’t scratch, though it’s more delicate than most powdered cleaners.  To shine the surface afterward, you can spray a bit of vinegar and wipe clean.
6.  Jewelry and Silverware Cleaner.  You can use a paste of a baking soda mixed with a bit of water (3:1 or so), or if that doesn’t work well enough you can try replacing the water with hydrogen peroxide.
7.  Coffee, Tea, Rust, and Hard Water Stain Remover.  Scrub with the same 3:1 (baking soda: water) paste, and it should do the trick!
8.  Pot and Pan Cleaner.  Sprinkle some baking soda onto your rag or sponge, and clean your pots – it will take off many stains.
9.  Drain Unclogger. If water hasn’t yet backed up, pour 1 cup of baking soda down, followed by 3 cups boiling water. Repeat if the drain doesn’t clear. If the drain still doesn’t clear, follow with 1 cup of vinegar. This makes it bubble, fizz and usually that does the trick! If this does not work, we usually buy enzymes from the local health food store.
10.  Cat Litter Extender. If your cat is persnickety about clean litter, in addition to cleaning the litter daily, you can shake a light layer of baking soda onto the litter and mix it up.
11.  Garlic Smell Eliminator. Cutting boards and other surfaces can be cleaned with a thick paste of vinegar and baking soda. Apply this paste and let it sit for 10-15 minutes – it will both clean and deodorize.
12.  Bath Softener. If you want to feel extra soft and silky, dissolve 2 cups of baking soda in your bath water.  This works well if you have itchy skin from bites or hives also.
13.  Exfoliator.  I use the same mixture for my hair (above) as a light exfoliator on my face every couple of weeks.  It’s quite rejuvenating.
14.  Homemade Toothpaste.  You can make your own toothpaste by using two tablespoons of baking soda and one tablespoon of peroxide.  I don’t do this regularly, but I have done it in a pinch.
15.  Denture or Retainer Soak. You can soak these overnight in a glass with water and baking soda.  It will leave them clean and deodorized.
16.  Fill small holes in Drywall. Yes, I have rented many homes and sometimes you find yourself without spackle.  Ah, just mix a bit of white toothpaste with some baking soda and fill the holes!  Let it dry completely before you paint or anything – but you might find you don’t need to paint!
17.  Fire Extinguisher. Great for a grease fire in the kitchen, a car fire, or another small fire.  Just sprinkle it over the fire until the fire goes out.  Keep it in your kitchen for sure!
18.  Shoe Deodorizer. Sprinkle a small amount in your shoe, or put some in an old sock and tie the sock – then stuff it in your shoe overnight.
19.  Ant, Roach, and Flea Deterrent.  If you have ants or roaches, sprinkle baking soda in the areas where they are coming in the house.  If you have fleas on the lawn, sprinkle baking soda around the areas where you and your pets walk by.  This helps.  I’ve written other tips for organic ant control here.  You can try it with snails and rabbits, too!
20.  Cook with it. Lots of yummy things.  Like pancakes!

7- Uses of Sodium Bicarbonate

Sodium bicarbonate has almost as many names as it has uses. Known alternatively as baking soda, bicarbonate of soda or sodium hydrogen carbonate, sodium bicarbonate is a basic, white, odorless, crystalline solid compound found in mineral springs or produced in the lab. While some places report that sodium bicarbonate has more than 100 uses, they can be divided into several main categories. Sodium bicarbonate can be used in baking, medicine, cleaning, and as an ingredient in fire extinguishers.

Medical Uses

Sodium bicarbonate is a long-known, over-the-counter remedy for heartburn, indigestion and other stomach disorders. Because it is a base, it acts by neutralizing excess stomach acids. It also treats various kidney disorders by decreasing the acidity of urine. Sodium bicarbonate has been known to increase the effectiveness of the anti-microbial sulfa drugs by neutralizing the body’s ability to filter the drugs out of the body.

Food Uses

Sodium bicarbonate is commonly used as a leavening agent in food. Leavening agents create gas bubbles that lighten and soften doughs in baked goods. Sodium bicarbonate creates gas bubbles when reacting with a weak acid, such as vinegar or cream of tartar. In a direct comparison, baking powder, which is a combination of sodium bicarbonate and an acid, was the second quickest rising agent after yeast, followed by sodium bicarbonate itself and potassium bicarbonate. Sodium bicarbonate is also useful in the manufacture of effervescent salts and beverages.

Fire Extinguishers

Fire extinguishers are categorized by the extinguishing agent they contain. Sodium bicarbonate is known as a dry chemical agent and is classified as a Regular Dry Chemical Extinguisher Class B and C. It is nontoxic, nonconductive and noncorrosive and is easy to clean up. These types of fire extinguishers are typically found in kitchens, labs and garages.

Endurance Enhancer

Sodium bicarbonate can be used to enhance endurance. Short-burst energy production can increase the acidity inside the muscle and blood cells. This acidity can produce muscle cramps and fatigue. The onset of pain is known as the lactic acid threshold, or LT. Increasing this threshold could theoretically allow one to continue high-intensity exercise for longer periods of time without the associated pain. One study at the University of Memphis showed that consumption of 4 grams per day of sodium bicarbonate over a six-day trial improved lactic acid thresholds by 12 percent.

Cleaning and Deodorizing

Sodium bicarbonate makes an excellent cleaning product. It is natural and safe for the environment and for the home. Compared to toxic-chemical cleaning products, the use of sodium bicarbonate reduces the risk of exposure from harmful residues left on surfaces and from inhalation. Unlike many cleaners on the market, sodium bicarbonate is fragrance-free, which is particularly beneficial to those with allergies or sensitivities to fragrances and perfumes. As a cleaning agent, it is extremely cheap.
Sodium bicarbonate neutralizes acids and breaks down proteins. It is cuts dried-on grease and is an effective stain remover. It removes coffee and tea stains and as a paste can be used to remove stains from teeth.
As an acid neutralizer, it also deodorizes. Many people use an open box of sodium bicarbonate in their refrigerator to neutralize odors on a continual basis.
Sodium bicarbonate has a finely gritty texture, which is useful for scouring. Due to its basic properties, it is both an antiseptic and disinfectant.

8- How to Use Sodium Bicarbonate to Alkalize Your Body

The pH is a chemical rating system used to measure acidity in a solution. In the human body, pH balance is disturbed by mainly poor diet and, when left unchecked, high levels of acid in the body can lead to most degenerative diseases. Keeping the body’s pH levels balanced can be done by improving diet, consuming more fruit and vegetables including dark leafy greens, but it can also be achieved with the ingestion of sodium bicarbonate. Sodium bicarbonate, also known as baking soda, is a natural antacid and a cheap, yet effective, way of balancing pH levels in the body.

Step 1

Purchase distilled water and baking soda from a health food store. This will ensure there are no unwanted chemicals in the products. This would be ideal but not mandatory. If an organic or natural food store cannot be reached or is too expensive, try a trusted brand of sodium bicarbonate available at your grocery store.

Step 2

Mix 1/4 tsp. baking soda with a glass of water. Drink it on an empty stomach once a day, preferably in the morning. This may have to be done for a few days before a pH balance is achieved.

Step 3

Purchase a pH test kit from a health food store or pharmacy and test pH levels in the body. Different test kits may have different instructions, so read the label for directions. Basically, the kits work by applying saliva or urine to a litmus strip which changes color. The shade is then compared to a color chart that comes with the kit. If the test shows too much acidity, try taking the bicarbonate and water solution upon waking and before bed. After a few days, pH levels in the body should level out.

9- Properties and Uses of Sodium Bicarbonate

Applications of Baking Soda

Baking soda is a weak base and therefore not a powerful detergent compared to a strong alkali which breaks down fat. However, it does remove dirt with the properties already alluded to. In order to prevent any alkali from damaging your skin, rubber gloves should be worn.
For the Home:
  • Cleaning agent – fridges, garbage disposals, etc.
  • Water softener – use in washing machines and for washing dishes
  • Deodorizing – shoes, footwear cupboards, carpet refresher
  • Fire extinguisher – forms a smothering soapy foam
  • Polishing – removes dirt without damaging high hardness materials such as stainless steel or iron
  • Mixed with sugar – acts as an effective pesticide for roaches and silverfish
In the Kitchen:
  • Baking – used as a leavening agent, the carbon dioxide generated makes the dough rise
  • Cooking – quickly softens vegetables such as french beans and broccoli
For Care of the Body:
  • Use as a teeth whitener – brush teeth with a paste of bicarb soda and water
  • Sodium bicarbonate ear drops
  • Stomach reliever – spoonful in cool glass of water
  • Eczema reliever – half-cup in hot bath from 15 to 20 minutes
  • Also good for the throat, painful gums, insect bites, and warts
  • Use in cosmetics and personal care products
For Emergencies:
Sodium bicarbonate can neutralize or reduce acids in the blood, or urine. It may be used in emergency medical situations (heart attacks, serious kidney or lung problems) to correct the normal acid-base balance in the blood or as an aid in treating overdoses with certain types of medications.

10- Sodium bicarbonate, From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Applications

Cooking

Sodium bicarbonate, referred to as “baking soda” is primarily used in cooking (baking), as a leavening agent. It reacts with acidic components in batters, releasing carbon dioxide, which causes expansion of the batter and forms the characteristic texture and grain in pancakes, cakes, quick breads, and other baked and fried foods. Acidic compounds that induce this reaction include phosphates, cream of tartar, lemon juice, yogurt, buttermilk, cocoa, vinegar, etc. Sodium bicarbonate can be substituted for baking powder provided sufficient acid reagent is also added to the recipe.[10] Many forms of baking powder contain sodium bicarbonate combined with one or more acidic phosphates[citation needed] or cream of tartar.
Sodium bicarbonate was sometimes used in cooking vegetables, to make them softer, although this has gone out of fashion, as most people now prefer firmer vegetables that contain more nutrients. However, it is still used in Asian cuisine to tenderise meats. Baking soda may react with acids in food, including Vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid). It is also used in breadings such as for fried foods to enhance crispness.
Thermal decomposition causes sodium bicarbonate alone to act as a raising agent by releasing carbon dioxide at baking temperatures. The carbon dioxide production starts at temperatures above 80 °C. The mixture for cakes using this method can be allowed to stand before baking without any premature release of carbon dioxide.

Neutralization of acids and bases

Many laboratories keep a bottle of sodium bicarbonate powder within easy reach, because sodium bicarbonate is amphoteric, reacting with acids and bases. Furthermore, as it is relatively innocuous in most situations, there is no harm in using excess sodium bicarbonate. Also, sodium bicarbonate powder may be used to smother a small fire, as heating of sodium bicarbonate releases carbon dioxide.[11]
A wide variety of applications follows from its neutralization properties, including reducing the spread of white phosphorus from incendiary bullets inside an afflicted soldier’s wounds.[12][medical citation needed] Sodium bicarbonate can be added as a simple solution for raising the pH balance of water (increasing total alkalinity) where high levels of chlorine (2–5 ppm) are present as in swimming pools.[13]

Medical uses

Sodium bicarbonate is used in an aqueous solution as an antacid taken orally to treat acid indigestion and heartburn.[14] It may also be used in an oral form to treat chronic forms of metabolic acidosis such as chronic renal failure and renal tubular acidosis. Sodium bicarbonate may also be useful in urinary alkalinization for the treatment of aspirin overdose and uric acid renal stones. It is used as the medicinal ingredient in gripe water for infants.[15]
Sodium bicarbonate has been known to be used in first aid, in treating scalding, to prevent blistering and scarring with instructions to cover the scalded area with a liberal layer of sodium bicarbonate and water paste and seek medical assistance. This is due to the endothermic reaction that occurs between sodium bicarbonate and water and sodium bicarbonate’s mild antiseptic properties[16][medical citation needed]
Intravenous sodium bicarbonate is an aqueous solution that is sometimes used for cases of acidosis, or when there are insufficient sodium or bicarbonate ions in the blood.[17] In cases of respiratory acidosis, the infused bicarbonate ion drives the carbonic acid/bicarbonate buffer of plasma to the left and, thus, raises the pH. It is for this reason that sodium bicarbonate is used in medically supervised cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Infusion of bicarbonate is indicated only when the blood pH is marked (<7.1–7.0) low.[18]
It is used as well for treatment of hyperkalemia. Since sodium bicarbonate can cause alkalosis, it is sometimes used to treat aspirin overdoses. Aspirin requires an acidic environment for proper absorption, and the basic environment diminishes aspirin absorption in the case of an overdose. Sodium bicarbonate has also been used in the treatment of tricyclic antidepressant overdose.[19] It can also be applied topically as a paste, with three parts baking soda to one part water, to relieve insect bites and stings (as well as accompanying swelling).[20]
Adverse reactions to the administration of sodium bicarbonate can include metabolic alkalosis, edema due to sodium overload, congestive heart failure, hyperosmolar syndrome, hypervolemic hypernatremia, and hypertension due to increased sodium. In patients consuming a high-calcium or dairy-rich diet, calcium supplements, or calcium-containing antacids such as calcium carbonate (e.g., Tums), the use of sodium bicarbonate can cause milk-alkali syndrome, which can result in metastatic calcification, kidney stones, and kidney failure.
Sodium bicarbonate can be used to cover an allergic reaction of poison ivy, oak, or sumac to relieve some of the itching that is associated with it (an alternative to buying hydrocortisone cream).
Bicarbonate of soda can also be useful in removing splinters from the skin.

Personal hygiene

Toothpaste containing sodium bicarbonate has in several studies shown to have a better whitening and plaque removal effect than toothpastes without it. Sodium bicarbonate is also used as an ingredient in some mouthwashes. It works as a mechanical cleanser on the teeth and gums, neutralizes the production of acid in the mouth and also acts as an antiseptic to help prevent infections.[citation needed]
Sodium bicarbonate in combination with other ingredients can be used to make a dry or wet deodorant.[28][29] It may also be used as a shampoo.[30]

Baking soda in sports

Small amounts of sodium bicarbonate have been shown to be useful as a supplement for athletes in speed-based events, like middle distance running, lasting from about one to seven minutes.[31][32] But overdose is a serious risk because sodium bicarbonate is slightly toxic[33] and in particular gastrointestinal irritation is of concern.[32] Additionally this practice causes a significant increase in dietary sodium.

As a cleaning agent

A paste from baking soda can be very effective when used in cleaning and scrubbing.[34] For cleaning aluminium objects, the use of sodium bicarbonate is discouraged as it attacks the thin unreactive protective oxide layer of this otherwise very reactive metal. A solution in warm water will remove the tarnish from silver when the silver is in contact with a piece of aluminium foil[35][36]
Baking soda is commonly added to washing machines as a replacement for softener and also to remove odors from clothes. Sodium bicarbonate is also effective in removing heavy tea and coffee stains from cups when diluted with warm water.
During the Manhattan Project to develop the atomic bomb in the early 1940s, many scientists investigated the toxic properties of uranium. They found that uranium oxides stick very well to cotton cloth, but did not wash out with soap or laundry detergent. The uranium would wash out with a 2% solution of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). Clothing can become contaminated with depleted uranium (DU) dust and normal laundering will not remove it. Those at risk of DU dust exposure should have their clothing washed with baking soda (about 6 ounces of baking soda in 2 gallons of water).[37]

As a biopesticide

Sodium bicarbonate can be an effective way of controlling fungus growth,[38] and in the United States is registered by the Environmental Protection Agency as a biopesticide.[39]

Cattle feed supplement

Sodium bicarbonate is sold as a cattle feed supplement, in particular as a buffering agent for the rumen.[40]

Miscellaneous

Sodium bicarbonate can be used to extinguish small grease or electrical fires by being thrown over the fire.[11] However, it should not be applied to fires in deep fryers, as it may cause the grease to splatter.[11] Sodium bicarbonate is used in BC dry chemical fire extinguishers as an alternative to the more corrosive ammonium phosphate in ABC extinguishers. The alkali nature of sodium bicarbonate makes it the only dry chemical agent, besides Purple-K, that was used in large-scale fire suppression systems installed in commercial kitchens. Because it can act as an alkali, the agent has a mild saponification effect on hot grease, which forms a smothering soapy foam. Dry chemicals have since fallen out of favor for kitchen fires, as they have no cooling effect compared to the extremely effective wet chemical agents specifically designed for such hazards.[citation needed]
Sodium bicarbonate is used in a process for cleaning paint called sodablasting. It can be administered to pools, spas, and garden ponds to raise pH levels.[41] It has weak disinfectant properties,[42][43] and it may be an effective fungicide against some organisms.[44]
Since it acts as a neutralizing agent, it can be used to absorb odors that are caused by strong acids.[citation needed] Because baking soda will absorb musty smells, it has become a tried-and-true method for used-book sellers when making books less malodorous.[45]
I hope the information in these shortlisted articles is enough to convince the readers to start taking sodium bicarbonate immediately and daily, as I do.
